My Musical Goals for 2022

Happy 2022!

My birthday falls in the first week of January, so the new year always feels like a double reset for me. Like many others at this time of year, I find myself reflecting on the past and looking to the future, and I thought it would be fun to share what some of my music-making goals for 2022 are. In addition to setting specific goals, I also pick an overarching theme for the year. In the past I’ve chosen themes that were designed more for my life as a mom—some prior themes were “play,” “home,” and “style.” But this year I’m planning something different. This year my theme is…

Go Big

The pandemic dramatically impacted my ability to engage in creative projects at home (especially where music is concerned), and I’m still recovering! I chose “Go Big” because I’m ready to make space for artistic projects again. I want to experiment with new ideas and take sizable creative risks, and I think this theme will help remind me of that. But what does that look like? Here are some of the specific things I plan to do this year:

Musical Mama Goals

  • Get back to posting more frequently here on the blog, on YouTube, and maybe even post on my social media accounts, which I hardly ever post to

  • Creating new products and resources for ukulele players — that’s all I’ll say for now :)

  • Experiment with audio, though I’m not sure what form that may take. Podcasting? Song recording? I can’t say just yet but I look forward to playing around

Personal Goals

  • Continue with piano lessons — I began taking piano lessons over the summer as a way to engage with music in a new way. Initially, I wanted to work on my aversion to sheet music, but I’m benefiting in more ways than I had anticipated! It has me thinking so much more about dynamics and my approach to songs as well as rounding out my music theory. As an added bonus, I’m able to play duets with my daughter, who is also taking piano lessons. Though my teacher lives in my neighborhood, we meet over FaceTime, and I’ve been surprised at how well our virtual lessons go.

  • Try a drum lesson — Drums are my favorite. We had a child-sized drumset when my kids were little and I think I played it more than they did! I can play a very basic rock beat, but that’s about it. We no longer have that drumset, nor do we have plans to get a drumset, so I would need to take lessons in person. Given the state of all things Covid-related, I don’t expect to be able to do this for a while.

  • Try a voice lesson — I think I would prefer to have this be in person as well, but we’ll see.

Have you set any music-related goals for 2022? I’d love to hear about them!
